Remarks owner: | This ruby-red/black GT was one of the cars raced by Bruce Richard Jennings, also called: King Carrera (1927 - 1997). He had several Carrera Speedsters in his stable, including short-course, medium-course, and long-course racers. They all were set up with different suspensions, gears, exausts, and engines. 1960 was Jennings first national Championship, winning the C - production crown. In an amazing year, not only did he win the final C/P race of the year at Daytona for the Championship, he also won the event overall, a combined race which included A and B production Ferraris and Corvettes. That year Jennings won 26 National an Regional SCCA races, winning the C/P crown by a slim margin of 2 points over Bill Romig in another Carrera Speedster. 1960 had been tough, but a realchallenge came for the 1961 season when the Carrera Speedsters were bumped up to B - production, he finished in 5th place in B/P Championship. Jennings also competed in B production in 1962 and 1963, finnishing second nationally in 1962 and third nationally in B/P in 1963. Bruce Jennings worked with the Porsche Corporation of America, which lead to several improvements on the Carrera Speedsters. He had gone from the 40 DCM Weber carbs to the larger type 46 IDMs, Jennings also installed the original Porsche disc brake system, later partially patented by ATE, up front. Bruce also preferred running the roller-bearing engines over the plain-bearing type, with type 692 engine cases. Many modifications were also made on the cars suspension components. His contemporaries wondered how he went so fast, and many of the tuning secrets developed by Jennings and his mechanic Heinz Werner Bade (a former VW mechanic and engineer, born in Hannover, Germany). Bade still remembered, that # 84926 (registered: BM - 6161, Maryland) was ruby-red, with the typical Jennings` front mask, running in the B/P and C/P championship and was modificated with all the improvements of his knowledge. Later the Carrera Speedster was sold to Harry Blanchard, also a famous racer in SCCA (1959 Blanchard, driving another Carrera Speedster, lost a race at Cumberland against Jennings - on the final lap of the race. With extreme pressure from Jennings, Blanchard overcooked his brakes and spun out). Carrera Speedster (#84926) is owned by Mr. Troche, a German collector, he bought the car in Oct. 2007 from Mr. Abe. Here is the history of the former owners for that car, as found by Mr. Abe: Mr. Beer bought this car from or through Harry Blanchard. Later it was sold to Mr. Gatty, who sold it in 1973 to Mr. Bill Jones from San Antonio. Marcus Mueller, owner of the MR motorsport museum (Switzerland) bought the car in 1987, it was repainted and refited, not restored. In 1991 Mr. Abe bought it and kept it unrestored until 1999. For one year it was used in classic rallies with a pushrod engine. In June 2000 a restoration started and the car was reunited with an original Carrera 1600 GS/GT engine (#93023). The current owner, Mr. Troche, had the car restored by several specialists in Germany. The 4-Cam engine and transmission have been revised by Karl Hloch (Schorndorf), body shop and painting by Reiner Donhauser (Illschwang, Dietersberg), machanics, chassis and electrics by Peter Weidinger (Nuremberg). All of them restorerd the Speedster back to original Bruce Jennings race-car-trim condition, supported by Heinz Werner Bade. He visited the restauration (see picture below) during his stays in Germany. The car is back on the road since October 2010. |
